Meals are a big part of your camping experience and sharing food goes on all the time. You may be camping with a group of family and friends who all get together for meals. There are some steps you can take to make sure your food remains delicious and safe for consumption.
You’ll probably be transporting food to your friends’ campsite or maybe to a potluck. Tables will be set up and pans & bowls of food might be out in the elements for awhile. Keeping your food at a safe temperature is important and we’ll give you some tips for doing so.
Hot food need to stay hot. Use warming trays or crockpots to keep food from cooling down. Pack the meat in a separate container to prevent it from contaminating other foods that are near it. If you’re grilling, put burgers on the warming side of the grill grate. You can keep it to temperature until ready to eat.
Cold food should stay cold. You can use ice or freezer packs to keep food cool. Try setting a bowl of food inside a larger bowl which is lined with ice. It will keep food from warming up during your meal. Try not to leave food out for more than two hours before returning it to a place to bring it to a safe temp.
If you marinate meat do not use the left over marinade on anything else once you take the meat out of it. It’s best to discard the marinade or only use it to brush the meat on the grill. Be cautious with mayonnaise based foods, or foods made with miracle whip. They can curdle if left out for too long and become unsafe to eat.
Cover food tightly when putting it away and store it in a cold refrigerator or cooler that is packed with ice. These things should assist you in having many delicious meals at the campsite. We look forward to seeing you here this summer. See you soon!
