There are plenty of fancy new apps and video games on the market that are popular right now. They are fun to use and we aren’t knocking them but there is still something to be said for the good old games of yesterday when you are relaxing around the campsite.
Cribbage is one of those long loved games that never grows old but you’d be surprised how many young people are completely unfamiliar with it. Once a grown up decides to teach them how to play you can hear the hoots, hollers, and laughs from several sites away. The kids love showing off how quickly they can add up their cards and if they manage to skunk their adult oponent the whole campground will hear it.
But a simple deck of cards will do, too. Games like rummy, double solitaire, and go fish will keep relaxed and happy for hours. Yachtzee is a simple game but highly competitive at the same time. It’s portable and stores easily which is another plus in the RV.
A lot of the games that were played in the past provide entertainment but also help kids learn math, strategy, and how to hold a poker face 🙂 All very important talents in life, wouldn’t you agree?
Finding time to teach these games to the kids when you are home is harder to do than when you are camping. At home there are many more routines, responsibilities, and deadlines that get in the way. When you are camping you are only limited by how long your campfire light will hold out and your eyelids will stay open. So, be sure to bring some of those old games along with you on your next camping trip – just in case. You will really be glad you did.
