Living in New York makes us pretty savvy when it comes to mold and mildew prevention. The humidity in the air can be a challenge to contend with if you are unfamiliar with mold treatment. Anything that is packed tightly while still damp from dew or humidity, can begin to mildew in a very short period of time. There are things you can do, however, and we’ll explain them for you.
You can work with what you have by using fresh air and warm sunshine to prevent or kill existing mold. The sun will bleach the fabrics that have mildewed and kill the spores that are causing it. Fresh air can rid the gear of mold spores and works well to make sure it is good and dry before being packed away.
Be sure to keep wet bathing clothes and towels up off the floor. Hang them over surfaces to dry thoroughly before folding them up. It just takes a short time in the sun to keep your camping gear clean and clear.
Once you get home, lay out your camping gear in a well circulated place. If night is falling, bring it inside to keep it from getting damp again. Once your gear is dried through and through you can pack it away for your next camping trip. You may even consider spraying the gear with some fresh lemon and water to assist in killing mold and removing any trace of it.
We hope your camping trip is memorable and you can pack your gear away without concern that it will be ready to go when you are. We look forward to seeing you around the park this summer. Be sure to make your reservations early. We’ll see you soon!
